UPS Freight, It’s Not What You Think it Is

UPS Freight is different than what most people would think of when they think of UPS. Most people think of UPS as the delivery service that delivers your Amazon packages to your door. But this freight is different.

It’s a separate division of UPS. Same company, but they specialize in moving freight. Freight is more defined as a full palette or more of a product. It’s moving freight from one origin to its destination, which is usually a warehouse. As opposed to a small package that gets placed on your doorstep.

UPS Freight is different in that regard. It’s a separate division that only handles freight.

Freight Class Factors

Freight class is determined according to the dimensions of your shipment.

If you’re shipping one palette, and it’s:

  •  48 inches by width and height
  • 500 pounds
  • Dry freight
  • Goods found on the shelves of any retail store

That would usually be class 125. It’s an estimation based on the dimensions and the weight of the UPS freight itself.

To calculate UPS Freight costs, it would go by weight and dimension as well as the class of what you’re shipping.

So if it’s a higher class, a potential HAZMAT, or breakable, it’s taken into consideration for the class code. But it’s usually more based on the dimensions, meaning how much space the UPS freight takes up in the cargo area.

Then the weight of it as well, because that’s taken into account for the movement of the freight. If you need heavy equipment to unload a shipment, take that into account when rating shipments as well.
