Freight Class Calculator Determines Density

Freight class calculator math uses density. This is because the denser something is, the cheaper it is to move around.

Freight like ping-pong balls is less dense and they take up a lot of space on a truck. They take up more space and they don’t weigh as much, so they’re kind of a waste of space so to speak. That’s how density is important. Something like copper would be much cheaper to move. This is because you can store a lot of it, heavy amounts of it, with little space. That’s where density comes into play.

Stowability Matters

Freight class calculator math also uses stowability. It helps determine freight class calculation. This is because the easier it is to store, the cheaper it is to move around. Things that are long and round like poles are harder to stow. So they cost more to stow them versus something that’s like a block. A cinderblock would be much cheaper because it is easy to stow. Ease of handling is important because of how easy is it to move around. Is it something that takes five different people to move, like an awkward-sized couch? Or is it something that’s easier to move around because it’s got handles?

Anything that’s easy to move around has a high ease of handling. So the easier it is to handle, the lower the freight class will be. Last of all, liability is what you’re moving and whether or not it is high value. Is it something like Rolex watches? Or is it like expensive TVs? Things that are of higher value carry a bit more liability. The denser it is, the cheaper it is to move. The easier it is to stow, the lower the freight class. How easy it is to carry around, ease of handling makes it cheaper to move. It gives it a cheaper freight class or a lower freight class. And of course liability – how valuable the product is. The higher the value, the higher the freight class.

Freight Class Calculator: What is the Purpose?

The purpose of the freight class calculator is simple. It helps people know how expensive or how difficult it would be to move things around for a truck driver. So the higher the class, the more expensive that it’s going to be to ship. As far as the trucks go, the higher the class, it’s going to be harder for them to move around. They’re going to be able to carry less on each of their truck. This means that they make less money. They would then charge more for a high freight class for the product that they’re shipping.

Freight Class Calculator

When a user is creating a shipment on a TMS, one of the things you want to do is you calculate the freight class. A lot of users don’t know the class of the commodity that they’re shipping. A TMS can have some valuable tools like a freight class/density calculator. You enter in the dimensions and the weight. You can determine how dense the product is, and that will help you select a more accurate freight class.

Product Catalog Helps Find Freight Class

Another tool that we offer that is useful is a product catalog. It is a catalog of everything that you’ve ever shipped and it ties a freight class to it. You can get these classes and build up your catalog by connecting to or looking up the NMFC catalog. You then find the freight classes for anything that you have ever shipped.

The NMFTA publishes the NMFC. It is a published classification of different, various shipped products and commodities. So you combine the density calculator, a product catalog, and NMFC. Then you can calculate the freight class for your shipments. This way, you gain a more accurate classification. Then you don’t have to worry about re-weigh fees and things like that.
